[p16.sup.ink4a] Induces an age-dependent decline in islet regenerative potential
Article Abstract:
The impact of [p16.sup.ink4a] deficiency and overexpression with increasing age and in the regenerative response after exposure to a specific [beta]-cell toxin was assessed to determine the physiological significance of its accumulation on islet function. The results support the view that an age-induced increase of [p16.sup.ink4a] expression limits the regenerative capacity of [beta]-cells with ageing.

Cancer biology: Gone but not forgotten
Article Abstract:
The persistent inactivation of the tumor-suppressor protein p53 pathway is necessary for tumor maintenance and this has opened new therapeutic avenues against cancer. The researchers have found that resurrecting p53 can be of therapeutic benefit even in established, fully progressed tumors.

Stem-cell ageing modified by the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor [p16.sup.ink4a]
Article Abstract:
The capacity of stem-cell cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor [p16.sup.ink4a] to modify stem-cell ageing is reported. It is learnt that down-modulating [p16.sup.ink4a] decreases age-related stem-cell apoptosis with stress and improves repeated repopulation of injured tissue.
